Title: Ports and the UAE
Published: Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles
Date: March 3, 2006
About this cartoon: A proposed merger of companies that run ports caused an uproar: a firm owned by the United Arab Emirates wanted to buy a British firm, which would ultimately put several major U.S. ports partly under Arab oversight, including on issues of security at those ports. Many of the 9/11 terrorists had UAE connections in their travels. President Bush staunchly defended the deal, even as members of his own party were aghast at the notion of Arabs running port security. And even if they conducted business as usual, what would happen to ships coming in from or dealing with Israel?
