About this cartoon: The Democrats in Congress feel they have been mandated by the voters to withdraw troops from Iraq, and to set a specific timetable for doing so; President Bush is adamantly against this, pushing instaed for his increased troop "surge." Much as I feel the entire Iraq war was a horrible, ghastly mistake -- and very poorly handled in most aspects beyond the initial military assault -- simply pulling out offers terrible possibilities as well, including giving a free hand to Iran to increase its influence, setting up an even worse bloodbath in Iraq, giving terrorists new confidence and sway, and risking a Mideast region-wide reign of chaos. There is no good alternative right now, but some kind of ongoing U.S. military presence is probably going to have to be a part of the long-term plan in any event.
