About this cartoon: California demanded that online retailers like Amazon.com charge state sales tax, a potential source of revenue for the state which also would level the playing field for brick-and-mortar retailers that are at a price disadvantage by charging sales tax when Amazon does not. Amazon screamed bloody murder and set out to fund a referendum to protect its interests; the state and Amazon came to an agreement to delay the tax collection until 2012.
