about this cartoon: | Title:
Jerry sprays Published: Daily News of Los Angeles Date: July 19, 1981 About this cartoon: Faced with the growing Medfly crisis, Governor Brown faced opposing interests regarding widespread spraying of Malathion, an insecticde. Urban dwellers were upset at the thought of the spray ruining their cars or maybe poisoning their water, while the important agricultural industry was screaming for the spraying before the infestation could get out of control. Brown hesitated, then finally okayed the spraying... by then the Medfly was in the Central Valley. The crisis pretty much doomed Brown's career in Sacramento. Noteworthy: I think this is one of my best drawings of Jerry Brown, and a good visual overall. |
