about this cartoon: | Title:
Political machinery Published: Ventura County Star Date: Sept. 20, 2002 About this cartoon: One of the main knocks against Gray Davis is the impression of pay-to-play: he has been so intent on campaign fundraising, and those who contribute seem to get favors or appointments or legislation coming their way. Novice Bill Simon, on the other hand, presented an unknown quantity. Noteworthy: This one was great fun to do. I came up with the concept of Davis as a vending machine that dispensed stuff if you put in money. It took awhile to think of an appropriate counterpart for Simon, and once I did, the title "Political machinery" jumped out at me as fitting. It was also amusing to turn the slot machine wheels into Simon's teeth. |
