About this cartoon: The proposed new energy bill working its way through Congress contained much of what George W. Bush was seeking and anxious to sign, including oil drilling in the Arctic Wilderness, tax breaks for energy companies, protection from environmental lawsuits, and the ability for the federal government to override states' objections to Liquefied Natural Gas sites. This windfall bill for energy companies was widely suspected to have been authored by the energy companies themselves. Soon after this, VP Dick Cheney was granted immunity from having to reveal whether energy interests did indeed write their own legislation.
