About this cartoon: The sad fact is that most newspapers in the U.S. are now under chain ownership. The remaining independents are often under tax pressure or torn by family disagreements and often eventually sell to multi-newspaper operations.
Noteworthy: I have worked for the (Chicago) Tribune Company, Hearst Newspapers, Gannett (very briefly) and MediaNews Group, with only a few months at an independent (San Francisco Chronicle) before it was taken over by Hearst.
