about this cartoon: | Title:
The culmination of ping-pong diplomacy Published: Daily News of Los Angeles Date: Dec. 19, 1978 About this cartoon: Jimmy Carter continued Richard Nixon's policy of opening up to China, which began with "ping-pong diplomacy" (an initial sports competition between hostile nations). Warming to China meant offending Taiwan for the U.S., while warming to the U.S. meant offending the Soviet Union to China. Noteworthy: For a fairly early cartoon, I like the artwork on this, especially the gestures and Carter's face. |
