Published: Ventura County Star Date: Jan. 23, 2003 About this cartoon: A piece of dramatic demographic news: Hispanics have surpassed African-Americans as the largest minority in the U.S. (in California, they now represent a majority of births). Since other cultures in the past have become part of the American fabric and influenced the feel and culture of the nation, I expect that Hispanic influences will become even more a commonplace part of what is considered "typical American." Noteworthy: A cartoonist's challenge: how do you depict "mom" in a universalist way? I think this one works reasonably well... |
