about this cartoon: | Title:
Financial privacy Published: Ventura County Star Date: Aug. 21, 2002 About this cartoon: Financial institutions buy, sell and share the private financial data of customers with other divisions of these institutions (and sometimes with other companies). They send obscure notices filled with fine print that the customer must sign in order to "opt out" of this data-sharing. California banks and insurance companies have been fighting a proposed consumer-protection measure that would make the opting-out automatic unless the customer specifically agrees to the data-sharing, rather than the current policy where the data is shared unless the customer specifically takes action to halt this. Noteworthy: First time I think I've managed to get the word "schmuck" into a newspaper, but it works okay here. |
