about this cartoon: | Title:
One nation under God Published: Ventura County Star Date: June 27, 2002 About this cartoon: The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco upheld the complaint of an athiest that the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance represented a violation of church-state separation (at least for the Western states, where the court had jurisdiction). This led to an instant firestorm of criticism as every damn politician saw a golden photo-op moment to speak up in favor of patriotism and the flag. The court order was quickly set aside again. Noteworthy: Colorized for the Web. This was a rare time when my editorial page editor called a news item to my attention and asked if I could do a cartoon for the next day's paper to go with an editorial on the same theme. This was a very popular cartoon in-house, but drew no public reactions or letters, oddly. |
