About this cartoon: Word has come that Mad magazine is essentially ending, to exist only as reprints of old material under new covers and perhaps an occasional year-ender of new material.

Like most cartoonists of my generation, Mad was a HUGE influence on me and my craft, and each new issue I bought as a youth was like a priceless treasure to savor. Mad taught my generation to be snarky and subversive, silly and clever, and to be skeptical of advertising and politicians.

This cartoon is a quick reworking of one I did in 1992 as an obituary to Mad's founder and publisher, Bill Gaines.
