About this cartoon: Representatives from nearly every nation gathered in Paris to discuss climate change, this time with greater urgency as the damaging effects of global warming are becoming clearly seen. With scientists saying the planet could handle a rise of no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius by 2100 without irreversible effects, the conference settled on an allowed rise of 3 degrees C (with hopes of perhaps revising that number lower down the line), and most of the enforcement is to be as voluntary goals determined by each nation. Meanwhile, congressional Republicans scoffed at even that modest achievement, hinting at overturning it if a Republican become president; the party's heavy funding by oil industrialists Charles and David Koch helps keep the party from showing any serious concern about this enormous global danger. |
